October 10th, 2014. 50 degrees, partially sunny.
Race Notes: The boys looked to get in their final preparation prior to next week’s Conference Championship at the River Rat Open, but the plannings and developments didn’t happen as originally planned. In the past years we have typically sat out the Varsity+ guys who raced at Portage the prior weekend which allows for everyone to have a weekend off competition. However, on Friday, a few boys voiced their opinion and expressed their want to compete, then a few more joined in, then a few more, then the entire team was committed to compete! It only made sense to allow them to compete and let them wreck havoc at Willow Metropark, and that they did.
Having been sick for the Portage Invite, Lucas Bell was on a mission to prove that his sub-17 performance at the Legends Classic wasn’t some fluke and he was going to compete with some of the conferences’ best today. Staying with the chase pack throughout the majority of the race, Lucas finished just outside the top-10 in 11th place in 16:45 (a time that places him 22nd on the All-Time Junior List). Following Lucas was the trio of Marc Lopez (29th, 17:11), Ben Nicholas (30th, 17:13), and Zach McKenzie (33rd, 17:18). Interestingly, these boys were fairly strung out through the majority of the race and didn’t find each other until the final quarter-mile. What was most interesting was how each ran a very different race; Ben consciously looked after specific splits and racers to compete against, Marc based his race off of Ben, keeping Ben in his sights for all but the final quarter-mile and Zach started the race with Lucas Bell, but a tightening calf mid-race took some of the wind out of his sails and forced him into compensating his form. The sub-18:00 Club grew a little bigger today with Stephen Robards (17:46) and Ryan McGinnis (17:48), both making a big splash by knocking off a combined 1:13 off of their Personal Records! Other (very) notable performances of the day came from Max Kleinhenz (18:13), Seth Greenfield (18:34), Grant Sprague (19:00), Chris Eakin (18:53), Arlo Flynn (19:51)and Drew Mathews (19:58) who all knocked off over 30-seconds off their Personal Records! Nice work fellas!!!!@#$%^&*&^%$#@!!
It’s very exciting to see so many boys not only running faster times, but also moving up in their finish places on a consistent basis. Up next, we have the SEC Championship at Hudson Mills on Thursday, October 16th. Should be a good one with the Conference Title on the line #gethype
